TRAVIS LOOKED at his watch and frowned. Jack should have been here by now. The party was in full swing, half the attendees were drunk, and Felicity had nagged him three times about whether Jack was on his way. Jack wasn’t one to go back on his word, no matter what was involved.
He tried Jack’s cell again, but still no answer. At first he’d thought Jack was on a call and unable to pick up. Now he was beginning to worry.
“Travis?”
Looking over, he saw Josh and Xavier walking toward him. Josh was probably the cutest zombie he’d ever seen. Fake blood was stained around his mouth, brains and who knew what on his torn shirt and pants. He’d certainly gone all out. Xavier wore his usual jeans, T-shirt, and leather jacket. But he had a machete—a real one—at his hip. He had claimed he was a zombie hunter and they looked like everyone else.
“What’s wrong?” Josh asked.
Travis shook his head. “Jack’s not here. He’s not answering his phone.”
Josh looked worried. Xavier shrugged. “Call the station.”
“I was just about to.”
They waited as Travis called dispatch and Wilson answered. The deputy said Jack and Jena had responded to a call at the old mill concerning two lost boys.
The blood drained from Travis’s face as his worry cranked up to fear. His cougar snarled. He knew Jack had reported to the mill numerous times during the day and night, but this time was different. In his gut, he knew it was different.
Halloween night was when it had happened. It was when everything had happened.
“Travis?” Josh touched his arm.
Travis shoved the phone into his pocket and grabbed his jacket. “It’s nothing, I just… I just need to go.”
“It doesn’t look like nothing.” Xavier stepped in front of him.
Travis barely resisted snarling at his friend. “Move.”
“Travis.” Josh stood beside Xavier. “Your face is white and you’re shaking. What’s wrong?”
He shook his head. “Probably nothing. I hope to God nothing. I’m just going to check on something—”
“We’ll follow.” Xavier grabbed Josh’s coat.
“Look—” Travis said, his voice edgy.
“No time.” Xavier’s eyes flashed green. “If it has to do with Jack, we’re coming. We’re family. Let’s go.”
Travis looked at the both of them in turn before nodding, resigned. They were.
“Fine. Come on.”
